Students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) during their junior year, the initial screen of program entrants.

The nationwide pool of 2016 semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. National Merit Scholarship Corporation will begin announcing the 2016 winners in April.
