WESTFIELD, NJ — A beloved Westfield business celebrated nearly 90 years in business last month.

The Town Bookstore, or TBS, on Broad Street celebrated its 87th birthday last month. TBS opened in 1934 and is one of the last two independent bookstores open in Union County, according to its website. The store has seen seven owners and two locations over its 87 years and is still selling paperback and hard cover books, like the day it opened.

According to the original business ledgers on display in the shop, TBS first opened its doors on September 4, 1934 and spent 72 years in its original location before moving to the Broad Street location, which was once Westfield's first library.
