Gallery: Hillsdale Hosts Joan D'Alessandro Vigil
The event marked the 40th year since Joan was murdered.
A candlelight vigil in memory of Joan D'Alessandro was held in Veterans Memorial Park Monday night.
Joan was murdered 40 years ago when she was just 7 years old.
Community members gathered to remember Joan and also mark another anniversary: the passing of Joan's Law, which eliminates the possibility of parole for those who murder young children. The law was passed after a similar vigil was held in 1993.

Joan's mother, Rosemarie D'Alessandro, has advocated for Joan's Law and other laws promoting child safety through the Joan's Joy Foundation. They are also planning to build a new white butterfly garden in the center of Hillsdale in honor of Joan and to promote child safety in the community.
