Memorial Day Parades, Westwood Pride Day This Week

Here's a look at the week ahead in Westwood, Hillsdale and Washington Township.

Monday is Memorial Day. Westwood, Washington Township and Hillsdale are all holding parades and services for the holiday. 

The Westwood Fire Department will hold a service at 8 a.m. in Fireman's Park at Five Corners. The parade starts at the park at 9 a.m. and proceeds down Westwood Avenue to Veterans' Memorial Park, where a service will follow.

Washington Township's parade starts at 10 a.m. at Westwood Regional High School, and the Fire Department will hold a ceremony beforehand at their monument on Washington Avenue. The route goes down Colonial to Washington Avenue, then to Pascack Road where the parade ends in front of the Municipal Complex for a service and free lunch.

Hillsdale will hold services for their first responders — the Fire Department at 9 a.m., Police Department at 9:15 and Ambulance Corps at 9:30 — and a parade starting at 10:30 a.m. The parade starts at George G. White Middle School and loops around Knickerbocker Avenue to Broadway, where it stops at Veterans Park for a ceremony at 11:30 a.m. 

Government offices will be closed on Memorial Day.

The Hillsdale Planning Board is scheduled to meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Washington Township Planning Board is scheduled to continue hearing an application from BP Products North America to rebrand the former Getty gas station on Washington Avenue. The board meets at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the township Municipal Complex.

Blooming Hearts Treasure Shop will host an introduction to watercolor class with artist E. M. Guilfoyle at 6 p.m. Thursday. The class costs $15 for materials.

Hackensack Riverkeeper and United Water will host the fifth annual Reservoir Challenege at the Oradell Reservoir in Haworth Saturday. There will be kayak races, guided paddles and food. Registration costs $30 and boat rental is $25. The deadline to register is Wednesday, but some late reigstration may be available. 

Sunday is Westwood Pride Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event celebrates local volunteer groups, many of which will be attending the event. The connected "crafts in the park" sale will go on at the same time in Veterans' Memorial Park and feature more than 100 exhibitors.
