Zabriskie House Trustees Seek $185K for Repairs, Upgrades

The trustees presented a plan to secure the house exterior and restore its appearance, address structural needs such as repairs, and more.

Township officials told Zabriskie House trustees they needed to see more information after the trustees asked for $185,000 to preserve, fund and increase public access to what is believed to be the oldest house in Wyckoff.

The trustees presented a plan to secure the house exterior, restore its appearance, fix structural needs, repair water damage and age deterioration, and upgrade the grounds, NorthJersey.com reported.

But Mayor Kevin Rooney said there first has to be an “open, detailed process” to get the funds, and that the Township Committee needs “to know when and how the house is going to be available to the public.”

The Van Voorhees-Quackenbush-Zabriskie House was built in 1740 by William Van Voorhees, and served as a store and tavern for travelers and families in the area, according to the Wyckoff Historical Society. It was sold in 1867 to Uriah Quackenbush, who’s granddaughter, Grace Quackenbush Zabriskie, donated the house to the Township in 1973 when she died.
