Albuquerque Public Schools: 50th Anniversary Of Title IX

This year is the 50th anniversary of Title IX and Albuquerque Public Schools is doing a series of events to celebrate the landmark legislation and to educate our students and staff about how it protects ALL students!

Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in educational programs and includes protections from sexual harassment, sexual violence, retaliation, and also protections for pregnant, lactating, and LGBTQ+ students and staff.

Let's kick off the celebration and get educators poised to teach and celebrate Title IX all year long! There will be sample lesson plans with activities for Elementary, Middle School, and High School. The lessons will center on the history of Title IX through an equity lens, learning how it began, how it evolved, and what it means today, 50 years later! Educators will leave with complete lessons plans for their classrooms.

Participants will get swag bags (limited) and be entered into a raffle for great prizes!

 NM Legal Aid and civil rights attorneys will lead an interactive workshop broadcast out to all middle and high schools that want to participate. An educator at each school will facilitate the group with a tip sheet, walking the students through the hour-long workshop to learn about Title IX and the rights it affords students.

To commemorate Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the 50th-anniversary committee will distribute lesson plans centered on building consent culture, age, and grade-appropriate for K-12

• June 23, 2022, 1 p.m., at City Center

To commemorate the actual signing day of Title IX, we will read the proclamations signed by the mayor and governor (pending approval), eat cake, and have small discussions about what Title IX means at APS and how far we’ve come!
