📰 News we're reading

1. APD: New Mexico National Guard to 'wind down' duties this week (koat.com) — National Guard support for the Albuquerque Police Department is expected to wind down this week, according to an APD spokesperson. Troops were deployed in April to help tackle fentanyl-related crime and youth violence, especially along Central Avenue. Officials haven’t yet detailed what comes next as this extra layer of public safety support is scaled back.

2. Albuquerque city councilor claims City Attorney acted unethically (krqe.com) — An Albuquerque city councilor is pushing for an investigation into whether City Attorney Lauren Keefe acted unethically in a legal dispute between the council and Mayor Keller’s administration. The concern centers on Keefe’s role after recusing herself from litigation over Albuquerque Fire Rescue staffing, with a vote on the investigation expected at the council’s first meeting next year.

3. Mural celebrates history of Albuquerque transportation (koat.com) — A new mural at Albuquerque’s Rail Yards is celebrating the city’s transportation history while also helping families heal from gun violence through paid art work. Artist Ryan Savedra drew on historic photos and hired 10 bereaved families, hoping the piece becomes a lasting part of Albuquerque’s architectural and cultural story.

4. New Mexico expanding use of gun and bullet scanning technology to more easily link crimes (krqe.com) — Albuquerque’s crime-gun technology, once only available through APD, is now being expanded statewide so rural agencies no longer have to send bullet casings to Albuquerque and wait months for results. New scanners in Farmington, Gallup, Roswell, and Las Cruces will feed a state-run Crime Gun Intelligence Center, aiming to link shootings in hours instead of months.

5. Community meets superintendent candidates for Rio Rancho Public Schools (kob.com) — Rio Rancho families just met the three finalists vying to become the next superintendent, including one longtime educator who previously led schools in Albuquerque Public Schools. Each candidate outlined different priorities, from boosting math scores to expanding dual-credit and innovative learning, with the school board expected to choose a new leader this week for a spring 2026 start.
