In February 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women's History Week. In the proclamation, President Carter wrote: "From the first settlers who came to our shores, from the first American Indian families who befriended them, men and women have worked together to build this nation. Too often the women were using and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed. But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength, and love o the women who build American was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well."
Since then, presidents continued to proclaim a National Women's History Week in March until 1987 when Congress passed Public Law 100-9, designating March as Women's History Month.Β Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women's History Month. Since 1995,Β each president has issued annual proclamations designating the month of March as Women's History Month.
The National Women's History Alliance selects and publishesΒ the yearly theme. The theme for 2022Β β Providing Healing, Promoting HopeΒ βΒ Β is both a tribute to the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during this ongoing pandemic and also a recognition of the thousands of ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history.
