Albuquerque Public Schools: COVID 19: Then & Now

On March 12, 2020, a novel coronavirus closed New Mexico schools and changed our lives. 

Two long years later, we are slowly emerging from our grueling battle with an unpredictable foe. I am happy to report that the number of COVID-19 cases in our schools and offices has dropped sharply over the past few weeks, from a high of nearly 2,100 the week of January 17 to fewer than 90 last week. But the pandemic has taken its toll, and we will continue to feel its effect even as we learn to live with the virus.

When we look back on the past two years, we recall feelings of frustration, loneliness, and fear. But don’t forget the triumphs, too. It turns out some good can come from a pandemic. We got better at communicating with families and more conscientious of students’ social and emotional needs. We became more innovative, collaborative, flexible, and focused.
