Here are the top three stories today in Albuquerque:
- The City of Albuquerque is working with the state to raise funds to buy and redevelop a Walmart location on San Mateo near Central that is set to close on Mar. 10. The goal is to eventually repurpose the site to serve local residents, as the store serves many lower-income neighbors who use it as their primary source for healthy food and fresh produce. The city has already secured $2 million in capital outlay funding from the state legislature, but it is unclear if Walmart is willing to sell the building or the property it is on. (KRQE News 13)
- The Albuquerque Police Department is working to enhance its partnership with tribes and pueblos throughout New Mexico, particularly in assisting with cases of missing and murdered Indigenous people. This objective is inspired by the personal experiences of Chief Harold Medina and Lt. Gerard Bartlett, who both have a deep understanding and appreciation of Native American culture. The goal is to become a better partner for tribal communities and to share resources to support their needs. (KOAT New Mexico)
- On Tuesday (Feb. 28), crews closed a stretch of eastbound Rio Bravo Boulevard, between Isleta and Rossmoor, in southwest Albuquerque from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., which will continue each day until Jun. 30 to work on bridge rehabilitation. Drivers are advised to take alternate routes during this time. (KOB 4)
