Here are the top three stories in Albuquerque today:
- Popular fast-food chicken chain Raising Cane's has opened its first location in Albuquerque. Earlier this week, the first Albuquerque Raising Cane's opened its doors to the public near the corner of San Mateo Boulevard NE and Montgomery Boulevard NE; a second location is expected to be opening on Jun. 6 on Wyoming Boulevard NE. Residents of the city were anticipating the grand opening, with several people camping outside waiting for the doors to finally open. (KOAT New Mexico)
- Albuquerque and Santa Fe will be joining the National Association of Letter Carriers, the U.S. Postal Service, and 13 other New Mexico communities for this year's Stamp Out Hunger event on May 13. All residents must do to partake in the event is fill a box or sturdy bag with non-perishable food items and leave it next to their mailbox for carriers to collect and donate to charity. Last year, in Albuquerque alone, the drive raised nearly 150,000 pounds of food. (KRQE News 13)
- John Bearden will remain in prison as he awaits trial for multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, and aggravated driving while intoxicated. The incident happened on Mar. 27 when Bearden allegedly took a state-owned vehicle from state fairgrounds and ended up in a crash, severely injuring a man and his daughter; the fourth grader died from her injuries 20 days after the crash. The accused pleaded not guilty on all charges in court this past Monday, and his defense is requesting they enter plea negotiations regarding the case as soon as possible. (KOAT New Mexico)
