- A group of students at Sandia High participated in a sit-in on Wednesday to honor students and teachers who were victims of gun violence in schools last year. The 57 students who participated represented the 57 deaths in 2022. The sit-in was part of a week-long effort to draw attention to the issue of gun violence in schools. (KRQE News 13)
- The Albuquerque City Council on Wednesday voted to approve the new ordinance that aims to deter catalytic converter thefts. Under the new ordinance, as reported in a previous newsletter, scrap metal dealers must keep a record of the identity of anyone who sells them a catalytic converter, including proof that the individual owns the vehicle from which the catalytic converter comes. (KRQE News 13)
- The Albuquerque Police Department reported that a police officer involved in shooting and injuring 48-year-old Gabriel Garcia in September had been fired following an investigation into the shooting. Former officer Quan La shot and injured Garcia after officers responded to a call and found Garcia allegedly breaking into a gas station. When confronted, police followed Garcia to a strip mall where he threw two rocks at La; the officer responded by firing at Garcia several times and injuring him in the shoulder.
