Here are the top three stories in Albuquerque today:
- The New Mexico Game and Fish Department announced that it will be euthanizing around 70,000 trout after discovering evidence of Whirling Disease at Santa Rosa's Rock Lake State Fish Hatchery. The trout from the hatchery are used to stock lakes and rivers throughout the state, including at Albuquerque's Tingley Beach where many local and visiting anglers like to fish. The state says there is no evidence that the disease can spread to humans, but euthanization efforts are necessary to prevent the spread of the disease. (KOB 4)
- The nonprofit organization Meals on Wheels has debuted healthy vending machines at local hospitals to encourage healthier eating, provide better quick-service food options to hospital staff and visitors, and raise funding to support the Meals on Wheels program. Currently, the healthy vending machines have been deployed at the Presbyterian Medical Centerβs cafe and Presbyterian Rust Medical Centerβs food court for staff and visitors, and at the Presbyterian Santa Fe Medical Center and Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital for staff. The organization said it would like to expand the program to other areas in Albuequreu and Santa Fe, and any organizations interested in hosting the vending machines can learn more about working with Meals on Wheels at ForageForGood.org. - Popular restaurant Fusion Tacos will soon be opening a third Albuquerque location at 5950 Gibson NE. The restaurant business, which started as a food truck in Santa Fe three years ago and has since grown to 11 brick-and-mortar locations and catering centers throughout New Mexico, recently won first place at the American Food Truck Festival several weeks ago. The new Albuquerque location will be a franchise location run by one of the business's longtime employees and is a step towards the owners' eventual goal of expanding outside of the state.
