Girl, 9, Burned Inside Bed-Stuy Charter School, Officials Say

A nine-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital after being burned inside a Bed-Stuy charter school Wednesday, police said.

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN — A nine-year-old girl was burned at a Bed-Stuy charter school Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

The young girl was found burned at 794 Monroe St. — which houses both Uncommon Schools Excellence Girls Charter School Elementary Academy and P.S. 309, The George E. Wibecan Preparatory Academy — about 2:30 p.m., police said.

The girl found a lighter in a bathroom and caught her uniform on fire, sources told the New York Post.

Emergency responders rushed the girl, who suffered second- and third-degree burns to 40 percent of her upper body, to the burn center at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell, according to police and the Post.

An Uncommon Schools spokesperson responded to Patch's request for comment with a statement.

“Our focus is on supporting the student and her family, and our school community," the representative said. "We are working with the authorities and will continue to communicate with and support our families and students.”
