No Smoke Alarm At Bed-Stuy NYCHA Complex Where Fire Hurt 2: FDNY

BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — An electrical fire that badly hurt two elderly Sumner Houses residents over the weekend broke out in an area of the complex where there was no smoke alarm, according to FDNY officials.

FDNY Fire Marshals determined Monday morning that the Saturday fire was accidental and caused by electrical wiring in the Myrtle Avenue building known as "Building 5" in the complex, according to fire officials. They also noted that a smoke alarm was not present.

The blaze, which took about 30 minutes to put out in a fourth-floor apartment, landed an 85-year-old man and 86-year-old woman in the hospital, according to the Daily News.

The elderly tenants were sent to Kings County Hospital in critical but stable condition, officials told the outlet.

The New York City Housing Authority told Patch to reach out to FDNY for more information when asked about the marshal's findings.

"This is an active investigation," a spokesperson said in an email.

The fire was one of at least two serious fires in Brooklyn over the weekend.

Firefighters also battled a blaze in Canarsie that seriously hurt a 1-year-old and a 6-year-old, according to reports. That fire, on East 89th Street, also hurt two 66-year-old women, a 23-year-old woman and two firefighters.
