Police Blotter: Five Robberies and a Carjacking

A roundup of crime activity in the 81st Precinct

Robberies

On Saturday, January 5, at 9:55 p.m., a 22-year-old man, was robbed in front of 634 Halsey St, while walking to the J train. According to police, the victim was walking down Halsey towards Broadway when a stranger approached him from behind and then brandished a gun. The suspect then went into the victim’s pockets, took his cell phone and also grabbed the man’s bag. The suspect then jumped into a maroon-colored jeep and fled northbound on Patchen Ave. Police are investigating the incident.

On Sunday, January 6, at 5:30 a.m., a 24-yr-old man was robbed at the corner of Malcolm X Blvd and Pulaski St. According to police, the victim was walking home when he was approached by five unknown males. One of the suspects told the victim, “giving me your money” then punched him twice in the face. Went through his pockets and took his iPhone, his Beat headphones and his black leather coat and $70. The perpetrator is described as black, approximately 5 foot 10, between 19-20 years of age. The victim said the others were around the same height and age. Police are investigating the incident.

On Wednesday, January 9, at 9:30 p.m., a 24-year-old woman was robbed of her cell phone in front of her home at 430 Pulaski St. According to police, the victim she was standing in front of her doorsteps and texting on her phone when a stranger suddenly ran up to her, grabbed her cell phone and fled. The victim called 911, and police were able to locate and arrest the suspect minutes later.   

On Friday, January 11, at approximately 6:00 p.m., a 24-year-old woman was accosted and robbed inside of her home on McDougal St. According to police, the victim said she met the suspect online, exchanged emails and then invited him over to her house for a “therapy” session. The victim said after the suspect arrived at her house, he tried to take her Beat Headphones and when the victim resisted, he pulled out a knife and a struggle ensued. The victim received two lacerations on her arm and then called 911. Police arrived shortly after and arrested the suspect in the house.

On Saturday, January 12, at approximately 11:00 a.m., a 56-year-old woman was accosted by a deranged man in front of 1154 Broadway Ave. According to police, the woman said she was walking to the J train, when she noticed a man sitting on the sidewalk acting disorderly. As she walked by, her cell phone rang, at which point the man started yelling obscenities. He then snatched the victim’s cell phone out of her hands and smashed it on the ground breaking it in half. The woman ran upstairs to the train’s token booth, where the operator called the police. Police arrived on the scene. He was arrested and charged with robbery.

Carjacking

On Sunday, January 13, at approximately 1:30 a.m., a man’s car Zipcar was carjacked while he was parked in front of 524 Jefferson Avenue. According to police, the victim said he was sitting in the driver’s seat when a stranger walked up to him, brandished a gun and asked, “What are you looking at? Now I have to take your car.” The victim said, fearing for his safety, he jumped out of the car and left the keys in the ignition, at which point the suspect got into the driver’s seat and drove off. Police are investigating the incident.
