Police Blotter: Three Burglaries
A roundup of crime activity in Bed-Stuy's 81st police precinct

Crime is up 56 percent (28 incidents versus 18 incidents) in the 81st Precinct for the week of January 7 – January 13, compared to this same week last year. For the month, crime is up 25 percent (111 incidents versus 89 incidents), compared to this same 28-day period in 2012. And year-to-date, crime is up 21 percent (46 incidents versus 38 incidents), compared to this same time period in 2012.
Three Burglaries
On Sunday, January 20, at approximately 11:55 p.m., there was a burglary (grand larceny) reported at 234 Ralph Avenue in #4E. According to police, the victim, a 50-year-old woman said she was sleeping when suddenly she was awakened to find a woman – an ex-girlfriend of her 18-year-old son—attempting to leave her apartment with a blue bag full of items. The victim stated that the burglar had once lived in the house with the victim and her son and apparently made an extra set of keys. The woman left the house with more than $1,000 in stolen items including an Xbox 360, a pair of True Religion jeans and shirt, a Wii game system and three Playstation plugs. Police are attempting an investigation. But as the victim would not provide the woman’s name or address, the investigation is ongoing.

On Monday, January 21, at approximately 10:40 a.m., there was a burglary reported at l34 Jewel McCoy Lane between Herkimer and Atlantic Avenues. According to police, the victim, a 60-year-old man said he was returning home when he found an unknown perpetrator in his home. According to the victim, the perpetrator said, “I got a key from your brother,” and then fled the scene with a jar containing an assortment of U.S. coins estimated at about $200. The perpetrator is described as a black male, approximately 45 years, 6 foot 1’ and approximately 160 pounds. Police investigators are still trying to determine whether the victim and perpetrator were known to each other. The investigation is ongoing.
On Wednesday, January 23, approximately 10:00 a.m., inside of 653 Quincy Street, a 47-year-old man returned home to find his home had been burglarized. According to reports, the man was returning from a 3-month jail sentence to find property had been stolen from his home including a Dewalt saw, two screw guns, a compressor and a nail gun. Police are investigating circumstances surrounding the victim’s girlfriend and the landlord, both of whom were aware the victim was not home. According to the victim, while he was incarcerated, he had requested his girlfriend gather some items from the apartment, but she was denied entry by the landlord.
