Locals Stay Cool at Bellmore Senior Center

The cooling station will be open to the public until 9 p.m.

On a scorching day, Arlene Greif of Wantagh took a trip to the cooling center in the Bellmore Senior Center to beat the summer heat.

"I think that it is a wonderful idea that they are staying open," she said. "We are all very appreciative."

The Town of Hempstead announced that cooling centers will be open to the public on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, temperatures rose to 92 degrees, according to the AccuWeather website.

Ann Thompson, president of the Bellmore Senior Center, said that the cooling centers are necessary, especially for seniors.

"About 50 people came today," she said. "Some have medical conditions and the heat can cause more problems."

During the day, the seniors were treated to a small concert from an entertainment group and were able to enjoy each other's company.

"It is great because we can sit and have conversations," Thompson said.
