Participation in Government and Senior Experience students have generated more than $7,000 as part of service learning.

Mepham High School students recently completed blankets for homeless veterans as part of service learning.

According to a school press release, students in Participation in Government and Senior Experience at Mepham High School have generated more than $7,000 since the beginning of the school year as part of service learning efforts for Tuesday’s Children, an organization that supports youth, families and communities impacted by a traumatic loss.

Through a variety of projects and events, students have given back to the families of 9/11 and to those currently serving or who have served in post-9/11 military operations, the release states.

The blankets will be sent to the Health Care for Homeless Veterans program at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx.

The program serves veterans who are homeless and have a medical, mental health or substance use disorder by providing outreach, crisis intervention and case management services, as well as housing and vocational services.

A transitional residence will open in the near future for veterans who have previously resided in city shelters. Each blanket will have an iron label stating that the blanket was handmade by Tuesday’s Children.
