Brooklyn Heist Team Has Been Tunneling Through Bank Rooftops for 5 Years, Cops Say

BOROUGH PARK, BROOKLYN — A dramatic Borough Park burglary on April 8 that left a hole in the roof of an HSBC bank wasn't an isolated incident, according to the NYPD.

An NYPD spokesperson said Tuesday that the HSBC burglary was one of 10 such heists since January 2011 — all likely committed by the same group.

In each case, the burglars struck in the wee hours, trying to gain entry through the bank's roof, police said.

Eight burglaries were in Brooklyn, while two were in Queens, according to the NYPD.

A list of all the crimes provided by police to ABC7 included both attempted and successful burglaries in Bensonhurst, Sheepshead Bay, Midwood and Bushwick — as well as the aforementioned April 8 heist in Borough Park, which hit a bank at 4410 13th St.

That crime alone netted the burglars about $280,000 in valuables, according to the NYPD.

If the burglaries are coordinated, then the culprits appear to be getting better with practice. Five of the first six heists were unsuccessful, according to the NYPD — but the last four worked like a charm.

Asked if any progress has been made in investigating the April 8 burglary, an NYPD spokesman would say only that the investigation is ongoing.

A spokeswoman for the FBI, which is assisting with the investigation, couldn't immediately be reached for comment Tuesday.
