Yo-Yo Pros To Show Mojo At Coney Island Throw Down

You might see anyone in town going to a (yo-yo) go-go.

CONEY ISLAND, BROOKLYN — Dust off your old Duncan and hit the boardwalk, the New York State Yo-Yo Contest is in town!

Slingers and stringers will descend upon Coney Island's Sideshows by the Seashore at 1208 Surf Ave. on Dec. 10 to show off their tricks and skills with the yo-yo.

In attendance will be world-class performers, who will showcase their modern yo-yo moves.

"Much like figure skating or gymnastics, timed routines choreographed to music are evaluated by a panel of judges," the announcement reads, "who consider criteria such as complexity, creativity and trick execution."

If you think that this means a day of yo-yo fanatics showing off who can perform the best "walk the dog," then take a moment to get acquainted with the intricate tricks shown on the Instagram account of contest emcee Brian Melford, president of the contest's hosting organization, The New York Yo-Yo Club.

A video uploaded by the NYYYC shows an informal yo-yo jam held in Washington Square Park this past October, with experts string masters performing acrobatic routines nearby the iconic arch.
