Mazzola Bakery has been a cornerstone of Carroll Gardens since 1928, when it was founded by Nicolo Mazzola, who brought traditional recipes from his hometown of Palermo, Italy.
Still operating out of its original location at 192 Union Street, the family-run bakery became known for its authentic Italian breads, baked goods, and other specialties. For over 50 years, Mazzola and his sons — Peter, Dominick, Angelo, and Benny — built the business on generations of hard work and a commitment to old-world quality.
Although Mazzola has expanded its offerings over the years to include new breads, pastries, coffee, and breakfast items, the bakery still serves its signature lard bread. Made with Genoa salami, provolone cheese, black pepper, and lard, the recipe remains unchanged since it was first created by Nicolo nearly 90 years ago.
Today, the bakery remains a family-run operation, now in the hands of Caravello’s children: Josephine, Frank and Anthony.
Other classic menu favorites include artisan semolina, ciabatta and rye breads, as well as a selection of fresh muffins such as blueberry, chocolate chip, corn, apple cinnamon and toasted oat. The bakery also offers a variety of bagels and focaccia sandwiches.
While no closing date has been publicly announced, the sale of the building raises questions about the future of Mazzola Bakery. For now, the neighborhood waits to see whether this nearly century-old institution will continue on or close its doors for good.
