Inside This Brooklyn Playground's $10M Accessibility Makeover

BROOKLYN, NY — Kelly Park Playground in Homecrest has just reopened its gates following a $10 million accessibility makeover, New York City Parks Department officials said on Tuesday.

Now, the park is more accessible for kids of all ages and abilities and features brand-new play equipment including a spray shower and a sandbox with faux fossils, to encourage imagination and collaboration, Parks officials said.

The playground makeover was financed by city funds directed by State Senator Simcha Felder, who represents the area.

The new playground also features a modernized public bathroom, with added accessibility features, which was part of a separate $1.6 million project funded by the New York City Mayor's office.

"Thanks to this transformational project, Brooklynites of all ages and abilities can enjoy a beautifully renovated play space with something for everyone,” NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue said.

As part of this project, Parks also enhanced the landscaping of the playground with winding paths, new trees, plantings, benches, and lighting, creating a greener public park.

"A long time ago, I started talking to people about having a park in Brooklyn where every child, regardless of their different abilities, has a place to play, explore, and grow," Felder said.

"This $10 million investment isn't just about creating a beautiful space. It's about creating a sense of belonging."

Kelly Park Playground is located at Avenue S between East 14 Street and East 15th Street in Brooklyn.
