BROOKLYN, NY — A driver was arrested after fleeing the scene of a crash that left a bicyclist dead, police said.

Akilo Cadogan, 34, of Queens, was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, officials told Patch.

The crash unfolded on March 10, 2023, around 11:23 p.m., when police claim that Cadogan struck and killed Eugene Schroeder, 56, from Brooklyn, at the corner of Morgan and Johnson Aves. in East Williamsburg.

Detectives from the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad believe that Schroeder was cycling in a designated lane on Morgan Avenue when he came to a stop near Cadogan's passenger side.

Authorities report that Schroeder was then hit and thrown onto the street while Cadogan made a right turn onto Johnson Avenue.

According to the police, Schroeder sustained severe head trauma.

Police reported that Cadogan immediately fled the scene and continued driving westbound on Johnson Avenue.

Emergency responders rushed Schroeder to NYC Health and Hospitals/Elmhurst, where he was pronounced dead by medical authorities.
