Man Dies From Injuries In Brooklyn Expressway Hit-And-Run Crash: NYPD

BROOKLYN, NY — A 77-year-old driver who was struck by another vehicle in a hit-and-run collision on the Gowanus Expressway back in March has succumbed to his injuries and has died, police announced.

On March 15 at 12:15 a.m., Athanasios Athanasiou was driving a Honda CRV on the Gowanus Expressway near 86th St. when he was rear-ended by a Jeep Wrangler, police said.

The collision caused Athanasiou’s car to be pushed into a concrete barrier. The driver of the Jeep exited his vehicle and fled on foot, police said.

Athanasiou was transported to NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn for injuries to the body and head. He was eventually transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was being treated until he died on June 20, police said.

The driver of the Jeep remains at large. No arrests have been made, and an investigation remains ongoing, police said.
