Here are the top four stories in Brooklyn today:

  1. Brooklyn native Richie Verito, who now owns the New York Deli in Circleville Ohio, released never before seen photos of the Sep. 11 aftermath. He was in Brooklyn the day of the attacks, but two days later he went with other volunteers to bring supplies to ground zero. After unloading the supplies, he was asked to stay and help remove the rubble. View the link to see the pictures. (Scioto Post)
  2. Detectives in Brooklyn are asking for the public's help finding an air pistol attacker who opened fire and injured three people along Wythe Avenue at the intersections of Grand Street and South 11th Street in Williamsburg on Sep. 4. The NYPD released video footage of the gray Toyota SUV involved in the attack. Anyone with information regarding the shooter or the incident can call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS (for Spanish, dial 888-57-PISTA), or submit information online at crimestoppers.nypdonline.org or on Twitter via @NYPDTips. (AMNY)
  3. Many parts of downtown Brooklyn are becoming pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods. The block of Elm Place south of Fulton Mall is now a "shared street," with planters and granite blocks keeping cars and street parking restricted to one side. The other side is for pedestrians and an outside dining area for Fulton Hot Dog King. After years of trying to keep the flow of vehicle traffic on major arterial roads in downtown Brooklyn, the focus is shifting toward improving the pedestrian experience on the neighborhood's side streets, according to Downtown Brooklyn Partnership president Regina Myer. 4. On Wednesday, Sep. 7, 21-year-old Meiver Martinez, an asylum seeker from Venezuela, was attacked by a city Department of Homeless Services (DHS) officer at the Brooklyn-based Atlantic Armory shelter. The incident was caught on camera and shows Martinez getting hit in the face, pinned down, and tased by law enforcement officers. The New York Times reported that the officer, who has not been named, was suspended. (The Guardian US)
