Here are the top four stories today in Brooklyn:
- On Tuesday, Sep. 6, former Brooklyn councilmember and current New York City Comptroller Brad Lander presented a grim forecast for NYC's financial recovery at the New York Financial Control Board meeting. Lander said NYC is "currently facing a period of significant economic uncertainty and mixed signals." While Fiscal Year 2022 was a year of "robust economic recovery" for NYC, the recovery is "incomplete and uneven" due to inflation and job losses. (Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
- According to an Aug. 26 update from New York's Department of Health, six "samples of concern," of the once-eradicated polio virus have been identified in New York City's wastewater. Brooklyn has the lowest polio vaccination rates in the city with 81.2 percent of children in Brooklyn having received all three shots. In Williamsburg, the percentage of children who have been fully vaccinated against polio is even lower at 56.3 percent. View the link to learn more about the vaccine and where to get it. - On Sep. 1, about 40 NYC climate activists from Food & Water Watch, New York Communities for Change, Climate Families NYC, 350 Brooklyn, Sunrise NYC, and Greenpeace USA gathered outside Rep. Hakeem Jeffries' Central Brooklyn office. The activists were urging two representatives, Clarke and Jeffries, to speak out against a deal that could speed up the review process for energy projects, including fossil fuel projects like the controversial Mountain Valley pipeline. The activists say this deal is "a step backward for the planet." (Brooklyn Reader)
- A mini Japanese marketplace, 50 Norman, is opening in Brooklyn's Greenpoint neighborhood on Friday, Sep. 16. The 3,500-square-foot space features reclaimed woods from demolished houses in Kyoto to bring the "essence of Japan" into the multi-retail and dining mini-complex. The marketplace features three well-respected brands from Tokyo that are debuting in New York for the first time. Shoppers can buy housewares from Cibone, dashi packs from Dashi Okume, and eat at a Japanese French restaurant named House of Brooklyn. (Time Out)
