📰 News we're reading

1. Brownsville Gains Its First Teen Lounge in a Brooklyn NYCHA Complex (bkreader.com) — A new teen lounge inside Brownsville Houses is finally open, giving Brooklyn middle and high schoolers a free after-school space with computers, a media station, and supportive adults. Created through the city’s neighborhood safety initiative, the Brownsville Teen Lounge runs weekday evenings and monthly field trips, and teens can sign up in person with a parent or guardian.

2. Investment Manager Extradited to New York in Alleged Ponzi Scheme (brooklyneagle.com) — A man accused in a multimillion-dollar investment scheme is now being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn after being extradited from the U.K. Federal prosecutors say he ran an “algorithmic trading” fund that allegedly operated as a Ponzi scheme, and he now faces serious securities and wire fraud charges in New York.

3. Marisa Tomei Net Worth 2025: Inspiring Journey of the Oscar-Winning Spider-Man Star (thebulletintime.com) — A beloved Hollywood star actually got her start on small stages and in public schools right here in Midwood, Brooklyn, before winning an Oscar and joining the Spider-Man franchise. This kid-friendly profile traces Marisa Tomei’s journey from local theater and Edward R. Murrow High School to major film roles, highlighting her Brooklyn roots, activism, and estimated $25 million net worth in 2025.

4. More money to ride: Citi Bike announces another round of rate hikes starting Jan. 5. Here's how much you'll pay. • Brooklyn Paper (brooklynpaper.com) — If you rely on Citi Bike to get around Brooklyn, expect to pay more starting Jan. 5, with higher per-minute e-bike and overage fees and a pricier annual membership later in January. Advocates warn the hikes make bike share less affordable for everyday New Yorkers and are pushing City Hall to finally chip in public funding so the system can expand equitably into more neighborhoods.

5. Hochul's second veto of LICH Act a ‘real shame' says Simon (brooklyneagle.com) — Brooklyn residents are again left without stronger protections against hospital closures after Gov. Kathy Hochul vetoed the LICH Act for a second time, despite bipartisan support. The bill, inspired by Cobble Hill’s shuttered Long Island College Hospital, would require earlier notice, public forums, and more transparency before hospitals or units close statewide, a change local Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon has pushed for a decade.
