Here are the top three stories today in Brooklyn:
- A teenager who was fatally shot in Brooklyn on Wednesday afternoon has been identified as Unique Smith. Police say the 15-year-old victim was killed at McLaughlin Park in what they believe may be a gang-related incident. No arrests had been made as of Thursday afternoon, though investigators are searching for a suspect described by witnesses as a school-aged, black male wearing a black hoodie, pants, and mask. (ABC 7 NY)
- The New York Police Department has released new surveillance footage of a vandal who defaced a Brooklyn mural honoring the rapper known as Notorious B.I.G. Police say the suspect approached the mural in Clinton Hill around midnight on Aug. 26 and splashed black paint over the rapper's face before writing "East Coast" in red spray paint. Investigators are still searching for the culprit responsible for vandalizing the artwork, which was first created by Vincent Ballentine in 2019. (NY Post)
- BAM Brooklyn is actively hiring a diverse cast to perform at the Harvey Theater at BAM Strong from Sep. 27-Oct. 1. Local community members between the ages of 10 and 80, of any gender, racial and ethnic background, and body type, are encouraged to apply. Participants must be able to jump up and down for five consecutive minutes and be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. (BAM via Instagram)
