These Are the 20 Most Crime-Ridden Brooklyn Schools, Police Data Shows

These 20 Brooklyn schools each hosted 5 or more student crimes in the first 3 months of 2016, according to just-released NYPD numbers.

BROOKLYN, NY — The New York City Police Department (NYPD)'s quarterly student crime report — mandated by the state's hard-fought Student Safety Act, passed five years ago — is out for the first 3 months of 2016, and it's more comprehensive than ever.

That's because for the first time, the report lists the number of times police used handcuffs and metal detectors on children in city schools, according to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) chapter in New York.

Cops used handcuffs on kids nearly 675 times in the first three months of this year, the data shows — including 83 cuffings of emotionally disturbed kids and 161 cuffings of kids who didn't end up being arrested.

Only 2 percent of all students handcuffed across the city in the first quarter of 2016 were white.

Same goes for arrests: Only 2 percent of all students arrested were white.

In its latest data dump, the NYPD has also listed all reports of student crime on a school-by-school basis. (Public schools only — no private schools.) Unfortunately, police did not tag those incidents with the race or age of the kid involved, so it's hard for us to determine whether a school's crime rate might have more to do with discrimination than actual danger level.

With that in mind, we thought it would still be useful to draw up a list of Brooklyn's most crime-ridden schools for the first quarter of 2016, based on the NYPD's new data.

Here's the top 20 — listed in order from fewest crime reports to most.
