Police were responding to 911 call for an emotionally disturbed person.

CANARSIE, BROOKLYN — The NYPD shot and killed a man in a Canarsie apartment Tuesday night who was holding a 13-inch knife.

The uniformed officers were responding to a 911 call for an emotionally disturbed person at 967 East 99 St., police said, around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday night. They were let into the apartment by a woman, and the man, 63-year-old James Owens, "emerged from a back room" and grabbed the knife, police said.

After he "advanced" toward the officers, one tried to tase him to no effect, NYPD said, and the officer other shot him. Owens was taken to Brookdale hospital and pronounced dead, police said.
