At Some South Brooklyn Markets, a Grocery List of Health Issues

While most markets in the neighborhood got a passing grade, inspectors have flagged repeated issues at a few.

For locals in South Brooklyn, the good news is that most local meat markets, boutique groceries, cheese shops and convenience stores on your block are clean by state health standards.

But some are not.

According to grocery store inspections for the area compiled from New York State's Department of Agriculture and Markets, 11 Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill businesses failed for having one or more critical violations deemed health hazards to shoppers.

At the top of the list stood Met Foods, at 197 Smith Street, which failed its most recent inspection after state workers found five critical deficiencies that were deemed an "immediate threat to the public health and welfare."

The deficiencies included having dried sewage around a drain vent near the food and vegetable prep area. Inspectors also found dried, old meat residues that were caked on meat saws.

An employee Patch spoke with declined to comment on the violations and the manager was unreachable as of press time. But one local at nearby Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream said he would overlook those specific violations if he had to shop there.

"I think one has to assume that there are health risks and rats everywhere," he said. "Because we are in an area in constant development and rats are parasitic by nature."

But rats weren't the problem at Mazzola's Bakery on Henry Street. That store failed once in 2012 due to issues with old dark product residues on bakery surface areas and 20 to 50 live flies found in the food prep area.

At Johnny's Grocery Store, located at 2 4th Place, inspectors failed the deli most recently when they found dark, caked-up matter on food contact surfaces and observed a food worker in the preparation area making sandwiches with bare hands instead of gloves. The store failed four times in 2012.

The following other markets had at least two critical deficiencies: The Fresh Diet, Staubitz Meat Mearket, Warren Grocery, and Hoyt Street Deli & Grocery.

D'Amico's, Melissa Coffee, Smith Grocery & Fruit and Lemon Tree Farm each received one critical deficiency as well.

At D'Amico's, as many as 20 to 30 rat droppings were spotted in the basement, where bags of coffee, coffee filters and beverages are stored.
