Boerum Hill Dad on Bicycle Crushed by Semi Truck: Here's How to Help

BOERUM HILL, BROOKLYN — An online fundraiser has brought in more than $22,000, as of Monday afternoon, for a Boerum Hill father gravely injured last week while riding his bike in Downtown Brooklyn.

Brian Ricci, 35, was hit by a tractor trailer at about 7:15 a.m. on Oct. 11 as he and the truck turned right onto Tillary Street from Jay Street, according to the New York Daily News.

Ricci was left with severe head trauma and was rushed to New York Methodist Hospital in critical condition, the Daily News reported.

The truck driver reportedly remained on the scene. He had not been charged with a crime as of Monday, a spokesman for the NYPD told Patch. (Police could not provide an update Monday on Ricci's condition.)

From January through August of this year, three cyclists were injured at the intersection of Jay and Tillary streets, according to city data — and another three cyclists injured within a few blocks of the intersection.

Brian and his husband, Frank, have a young son named Rocco. In a post on the Boerum Hill At Large Facebook page, family friend Scott Kohanowski described the trio as "a beautiful family going through some pretty traumatic stuff right now."

"They are everything I love about Brooklyn and Boerum Hill," Kohanowski wrote.

The online fundraiser for Brian and his family, set up by their friends, is dedicated to helping "cover urgent and unexpected costs" and other family needs.

"Give what you can, when you can (repeat donations welcome)," the fundraising page says. "Every little bit helps. With love and tremendous gratitude, Team Ricci."
