New Cobble Hill Bookstore Has An Opening Date

Books Are Magic, a new book store planned by author Emma Straub, hopes to fill the void left by BookCourt and Community Bookstore.

COBBLE HILL, BROOKLYN — Books Are Magic, the new independent book store planned for Cobble Hill by Brooklyn author Emma Straub, is tentatively set to open on or about May 1, she said Monday night in a newsletter update with her husband, Michael Fusco.

"The store has lovely windows and lots of exposed brick, and about thirty of BookCourt's bookshelves, each of them imbued with lots of good luck and bookselling love," the pair writes in the newsletter.

Straub and Fusco say they "plan to open on (or around) May 1st, which is just around the corner." They also said they are "hiring staff, booking events, and ordering books."

Plans for Books Are Magic were announced in December after the closing of Community Bookstore and BookCourt, two Cobble Hill institutions.

"A neighborhood without an independent bookstore is a body without a heart," Straub wrote at the time. "And so we’re building a new heart."

It also sounds like Books Are Magic has some more announcements in the works.

"We're making friends with our neighbors (expect fun collaborations in the near future.)" Straub wrote Monday. "The best part is that every time we're in the space, neighbors pass and poke their heads in and tell us that they're happy we're here. We are, too."

The text in parentheses linked to websites for the neighborhood cheese shop Stinky Brooklyn and the sunglasses-maker Warby Parker, which has a brick-and-mortar store off of Smith Street.

We've reached out to Straub and Fusco for more information, and we'll let you know if we hear back.
