Nydia Velazquez Wins Primary, Crushing Challengers in the 7th District

The Congresswoman won renomination Tuesday for the seat she's held since 1993.

Despite what many called an abysmal voter turnout, US Rep. Nydia Velazquez still managed to crush her challengers—taking 58 percent of the vote in on Tuesday.

After a day spent campaigning with supporters such as outside the Carroll Street subway station and Ed Koch on the Lower East Side, Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez toasted her victory in the primary at East River Bar in Williamsburg among friends.

New York Councilman Erik Martin Dilan was considered Velazquez's strongest opponent, but was only able to capture 31 percent of the vote. The two other candidates, George Martinez and Dan O'Connor, received 3 and 8 percent, respectively.
