School Begins, Primaries Held This Week

What's happening this week in and around Carroll Gardens.

- Today will be the first day of school for students in the New York City public school system, so keep an eye out for kids on the streets and sidewalks this morning and afternoon.

- That also means that the city's new system of high-speed cameras in school zones will be making its debut today.

- Tuesday will be Primary Day in New York City. You can find your polling site online at the Board of Elections website here. For Democrats, the current front-runner is Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, being chased by Bill Thompson, Christine Quinn, Anthony Weiner and John Liu. Among Republicans, Joe Lhota and John Catsimatidis are locked in a struggle for the nomination.

-  The Brooklyn Philharmonia Chorus is looking for new singers. Open Auditions for all voice parts begin Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 124 Henry Street.

- Come in for a sample of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches featuring spreads from Better Off Spread, Anarchy in a Jar and Sweet Deliverance Thursday, 3 p.m. at 261 Smith St.
