Hail Possible, Heavy Storms Likely In NYC Forecast: See Timeline

NEW YORK CITY — Heavy rain, wind and thunder are expected to pummel the city this week, with chances for hail on Monday evening, forecasters said.

According to the National Weather Service, the first storm of the week is expected to hit Monday afternoon with thunder and heavy rainfall after a cold front settles in midafternoon.

"A few thunderstorms ahead of an approaching cold front late this afternoon into early this evening may produce locally damaging wind gusts and large hail," the warning reads.

The city could get up to two inches in rainfall Monday night, forecasters said.

Then, the rain will clear out until Thursday night when the temperature is expected to hit a low of 61 degrees and bring a 70 percent chance of rain showers, National Weather Service forecasters said.

According to forecasters, Wednesday night through Friday during the day will see heavy rain and pockets of thunder, before calming down over the weekend.

Here's the latest forecast from the National Weather Service.

Monday: A 40 percent chance of showers, mainly after noon. Areas of fog before 10 a.m. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 73. South wind 10 to 13 mph.

Monday night: A 100 percent chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Areas of fog between 10 p.m. and midnight. Low around 45. South wind 8 to 15 mph becoming northwest after midnight. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Tuesday: Partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 58. Breezy, with a northwest wind 18 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.

Tuesday night: Clear, with a low around 36. Northwest wind 8 to 13 mph.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 50. Northeast wind 9 to 11 mph becoming southeast in the afternoon.

Wednesday night: A 40 percent chance of showers after 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 45.

Thursday: A 40 percent chance of showers before 2 p.m. Cloudy, with a high near 72.

Thursday night: Showers likely, mainly after 2 a.m. Cloudy, with a low around 61. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent.

Friday: Showers likely, mainly before 8 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 69. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent.

Friday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 49.
