NEW YORK CITY — The spring equinox this week will be a stormy one, with a 100 percent chance of rain on Thursday and chances for thunder, according to the latest forecasts.

According to the National Weather Service, a light drizzle could start as early as 5 a.m. Thursday, and coat the city in a patchy fog until at least 2 p.m.

Then, Thursday night will see a 100 percent chance of rain, as a storm moves through the area, dumping up to three-quarters of an inch of rain on the city, forecasters said. Thursday night is the spring equinox.

According to AccuWeather, there's a 29 percent chance of thunder overnight on Thursday.

Then, on Friday, the temperature will stay in the mid-40s, and there's a 60 percent chance of rain, mainly before 8 a.m., forecasters from the National Weather Service said. Up to a quarter inch of rain could fall, forecasters said.

On Friday, there will also be wind gusts blowing as fast as 43 miles per hour, forecasters said.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 58. South wind 6 to 8 mph.

Wednesday night: A chance of drizzle, mainly after 5 a.m. Patchy fog after 2 a.m. Otherwise, increasing clouds, with a low around 46. Southeast wind around 8 mph.

Thursday: A chance of drizzle, mainly before 8 a.m., then a slight chance of showers after 2 p.m. Patchy fog before 2 p.m. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a steady temperature around 49. Southeast wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Thursday night: Showers, mainly after 8 p.m. Steady temperature around 51. Southeast wind 13 to 15 mph becoming northeast after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New precipitation amounts between a half and three-quarters of an inch possible.

Friday: Showers likely, mainly before 8 a.m. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 48. Windy, with a northwest wind 26 to 30 mph, with gusts as high as 43 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Friday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 40. Breezy.
