NEW YORK CITY — As New Yorkers head into one of the busiest weeks of travel ahead of Thanksgiving, a storm system is closing in on the Big Apple, according to forecasters at the National Weather Service.

The rain system is moving northeast across the country and will hit the New York City metro area Tuesday afternoon, just after 1 p.m., bringing showers and mild temperatures, according to the National Weather Service's latest forecast.

The peak of the storm will be on Tuesday evening, with an 100 percent chance of rain in the city, slicking the roads, tarmacs and train tracks for holiday travelers, according to the latest forecast.

The storm will peter off by Wednesday evening, with some lingering showers during the day Wednesday, before temperatures drop into the low 40s, forecasters said.

Luckily, Thanksgiving should be dry in New York, as a cold front bringing fast winds will move into the region Thursday.

"Windy conditions looking more likely Thanksgiving through Friday. Possibility for wind gusts 35 to 40 mph, with peak gusts to around 45 mph Thanksgiving through Friday," National Weather Service forecasters said.

Here's the latest forecast from the National Weather Service.

Monday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 42. Calm wind.

Tuesday: A 50 percent chance of rain after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 54. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph.

Tuesday night: Rain, mainly before 1 a.m. Temperature rising to around 55 by midnight. South wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Wednesday: A 40 percent chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 64. Southwest wind 3 to 5 mph.

Wednesday night: A 30 percent chance of rain before 1 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 41.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 44.

Thursday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 34.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 42.

Friday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 32.
