Tony Godino Honored as 27th Leatherman's Loop Approaches

The Leatherman's Loop news is aplenty this week, starting with the Bedford Historical Society's tribute to race founder Tony Godino, followed by the launch of a photo exhibit about the Loop and the race itself, slated for Sunday.

For a retiree, Tony Godino is an incredibly busy person.

The co-founder of the Leatherman's Loop continues to be involved with the planning and execution of the race each year, even after passing the torch to new directors a few years ago.

A history buff, he's also a member of the Friends of Bedford Burying Grounds and a member of the North Castle and Bedford Historical Societies.

In selecting Godino as an honoree for their benefit event this Friday, the Bedford Historical Society said he "contributed mightily to our understanding of local history in Bedford and surrounding communities with his lifelong good works and historic restorations."

Godino said he was pleased with the honor, but slightly embarrassed, too.

"I usually fly below the radar," he said.

Godino agreed to be the honoree when he learned the funds raised for the event would benefit education programs at the historical society, and the Trailside Museum at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation.

When asked what motivated him to volunteer his time in so many ways, he said he was involved in causes and programs for which he felt passion.

"I just do what feels right," he said.

At Friday's event, a photo exhibit on the Leatherman's Loop and Run the Farm— the annual 5K at Muscoot Farm that Godino also helped co-found a few years ago—will be on display, and a preview of the documentary film on the race will be shown.

The photo exhibit will be moved to treat in Cross River and will be up for a few months, according to the Loop's technical director, Rob Cummings, who has a few photos in the exhibit.

Tickets are $100 and can be purchased online or by calling the Bedford Historical Society at (914) 234-9751. Proceeds will benefit the Historical Society's Education Fund and the Friends of the Trailside Nature Museum at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation.
