Burglaries Up 80% In Chelsea Over October ‘22: NYPD Data

CHELSEA, NY - Though major crimes are on the decline in NYC overall, Chelsea saw several crime types surge in October compared to last year’s data.
In Chelsea's 10th precinct, which also covers Hudson Yards and Clinton, crooks and killers are less busy on average this month, according to the most recent NYPD statistics.
Major crimes decreased in Chelsea from Sept. 25 to Oct. 22 by 37.5%, per the data. In New York City, major crimes fell 5.4%.

But despite the overall lull, the 10th precinct saw petit larceny, or thefts under $1,000, spike 7.9% during the same time period with 68 reported incidents. 18 reported burglaries marked a startling 80% increase compared to the same period last year.
Hate crimes increased by 100%, with one reported to the precinct in 2023 compared to none in 2022.

The good news: felony assaults (10 reported incidents) decreased by 37.5% and robberies (nine reported incidents) decreased by 40%. The number of transit crimes remained the same (five reported incidents) year-over-year, per the dataset.
The precinct saw no changes to the number of reported murders, shooting incidents and rapes year-over-year, per NYPD data. There were no murders, rapes or shooting incidents in the 10th precinct in October 2022 or 2023; two rapes were reported in October both years.
On the whole, the continued decline in crime statistics could be a promising sign during a time when crime is still up compared to recent history.
Major felonies are still up by 32% over pre-pandemic 2019 data, and by 13.7% compared to 10 years ago.
Despite the recent increases since the pandemic, reported crime is still lower for Chelsea when compared to the late Giuliani administration. In 2022, reported crime was down by more than 22% compared to 2001 levels.
