A Cat Film Festival Is Coming To NYC

NYC is getting its first cat film festival.

CHELSEA, NY — The city is getting its first film festival dedicated solely to its feline residents.

The NY Cat Film Festival is hosting its inaugural show in December at the SVA Theatre, 333 W. 23rd St., in Chelsea. The festival will exclusively feature films about and featuring cats.

The festival, which will run on Dec. 9, comes after the success of the NY Dog Film Festival, which has shown in New York City for several years with no feline equivalent to accompany it.

The cat festival will screen a variety of different films, from fictionalized works to mini-documentaries about some of the world's most interesting cats.

The filmmaker Ian Christopher Goodman is presenting a 10-minute documentary about Akamatsu, Goodman's cat who was paralyzed by a car. The film documents Akamatsu's life and follows the cat as he moves around on a custom-made cat wheelchair. Akamatsu also can't go to the bathroom by himself, and needs Goodman's help to do so on a human toilet.

Other films follow professional cat groomers, a timid cat who comes from Riverside Park in Manhattan, and the group cats living in the iconic Buenos Aires Recoleta cemetery.
