"He was an unparalleled father and husband who always put his family first," his friend Patrick Haynes wrote on Facebook, according to the New York Daily News. "His selflessness extended beyond his family to his country."

Hanegby was raised in Israel, where he was ranked the number one tennis player in the country, before he temporarily quit the sport to join Israel’s Special Forces, according to a profile of him published in the Brown Daily Herald. After serving in the military, he moved to the U.S., where he eventually enrolled at Brown University in Rhode Island.

While at Brown, Hanegby returned to tennis. He joined the school's team and was heralded at a team leader and was eventually ranked as the no. 66 college singles player in the country, the Daily Herald reported.

"He’s the hardest-working guy on the team," his coach told the newspaper. "He brings a depth of character to the team that you can’t measure."

Hanegby and a coach bus were both traveling eastbound on W 26th Street, between Eighth and Seventh Avenues, at the time of the accident. The bus and the Citi Bike collided, at which point Hanegby "fell to the ground which resulted in the rear tires rolling over the bicyclist," police said. The 52-year-old bus driver remained on scene after the crash and has not been charged in connection with the death, authorities said.
