Firefighter Hospitalized In Hotel Chelsea Fire Thursday: FDNY
The blaze erupted inside the Hotel Chelsea's kitchen Thursday morning, officials said.

CHELSEA, NY - An FDNY firefighter was hospitalized after battling a fire at the historic Chelsea Hotel Thursday morning, authorities said.
The fire was first reported about 10:20 a.m. in the first floor kitchen of the 12-story hotel at 222 W 23rd St., an FDNY spokesperson told Patch. The blaze later extended to the second floor ductwork.
A second alarm hailing assistance from nearby fire crews was called about 10:40 a.m., fire officials said. The fire was deemed under control abut 11:57 a.m.

One firefighter was transported to Lenox Hill Health Plex to be treated for "minor injuries," fire officials said. No other physical injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by FDNY fire marshals.

A section of West 23rd Street remains closed between 7th and 8th avenues, according to CBS New York.
The 250-unit hotel was built in the 1880s and was used as a housing cooperative by a slew of 20th century artists, writers, actors and musicians such as Patti Smith, Robert Mapplethorpe, Jackson Pollock, Diego Rivera and Bette Davis.
The building is a designated New York City landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
