Gay Hate Attack: Man With Walker Beaten In Heart Of Chelsea, Police Say

The man was pummeled as he waited for a bus in the middle of the day, the NYPD said.

CHELSEA, NY — An anti-gay attack left a man using a walker beaten as he waited for a bus in the heart of Chelsea Monday, police said.

The man, 44, was at Sixth Avenue and West 26th Street at about 4 p.m. when a stranger began pummeling him while yelling homophobic statements, the NYPD said. The man was using a walker that had a sticker supporting the LGBT community on it, police said.

The attacker, who police said was about 30 years old, fled the scene on a bicycle, police said. His victim was taken to Bellevue hospital for treatment.(Want more local news? Subscribe here for updates to his story and free breaking news alerts from Patch.)

The attack came just a day after tens of thousands took part in the Pride March celebrations, which wound along a route that passed just a block from the incident.
