ICYMI: NYC College Student Dies From Injures In Chelsea Collision

Frederick Swope, an NYC college student, has died from his injuries after he was struck by a car in Chelsea last month.

CHELSEA, NY — The NYC college student who was critically injured when he was struck by a car last month has died from his injuries, police said.

Frederick Swope, a student at Baruch College, died on July 24, an NYPD spokeswoman confirmed to Patch. News of Swope's death was first reported by the New York Daily News. Swope was seriously wounded on July 17 as he walked through a crosswalk near Chelsea Piers. He was hit by the car at about 10:30 p.m. on July 17 as he crossed 22nd Street near 12th Avenue, police said.

The driver of the car was not immediately arrested after the crash, police said. The investigation into Swope's death remains ongoing, according to the NYPD spokeswoman. Swope, 21, was a rising senior at Baruch College where he was studying business and economics, according to an obituary published in his hometown paper, the Richmond Times Dispatch. Swope moved to New York from Midlothian, Virginia, a town near Richmond.

"At the time of his death, Frederick was thriving as a son and a brother, a student and an aspiring professional and his life philosophy - 'Expect the best. Accept the worst.' - captured a spirit and optimism that was distinctly his," the obituary reads.

Swope's friend and former roommate Austin Zajur remembered him as a "the older brother I never had."

"He truly had a gift of recognizing the greatness in people when they couldn’t recognize it in themselves AND THEN motivating them to believe in their greatness within," Zajur wrote in a Facebook post. "I still can't believe you are gone man. It seems like just yesterday we were exploring NYC together talking about all the dreams we had and goals we would accomplish together."
