Commack Branch of Smithtown Library To Reopen

The of the Smithtown Special Library District will reopen during the week of April 11, according to district officials.

The library, which has been closed and since April 2010, is the first of the four libraries in the district to be completely made over in a $21 million renovation project. 

"We're excited, I think the library patrons are going to be very excited," said Library Director Robert Lusak. "It literally is a new building. Every corner has been renovated."

While the original plans anticipated the reopening to occur in late 2010, the harsh winter—including several snowstorms—stalled the project's completion.

Within the new building, crews and library personnel are working diligently to tie up all the loose ends in construction and re-stock the shelves before it opens to the public. And although the project will soon be finished, there will be no rest for those working in the Smithtown District. According to Lusak, renovations at the Kings Park branch will begin the day after the Commack branch opens.
