"Anything that brings a smile to our residents’ faces and reminds them of the things they enjoyed in the past is what we’re here for," said Joel Gali, vice president and administrator of Gurwin Assisted Living, in a news release. "This is just great for them."
The celebration recreated the magic of Luna Park with classic carnival games such as horse-racing, Skee-ball, ring toss and basketball. Residents were delighted by appearances from whimsical boardwalk characters, including the Coney Island Mermaid, Strong Man, fortune teller, clowns, and even a life-sized walking hot dog. Adding to the ambiance was a showing of vintage Coney Island film footage, setting the scene for an immersive and joyful experience.

No Coney Island-themed day would be complete without iconic boardwalk fare. Residents indulged in fried Oreos, hot pretzels, churros, sliders, Italian ices, and of course, hot dogs with mustard and sauerkraut — bringing the full flavor of nostalgia to life.
Among those smiling the widest was resident Genevieve Strumpf, whose personal connection to Coney Island made the day even more meaningful.
"Every Tuesday night, we went to Coney Island for the fireworks," said Strumpf, formerly of Commack, who recalled trips with her six siblings. "My dad went to Nathan’s and had a beer and some clams on the half shell, and we were on the beach watching the fireworks."
As the nation prepares to mark National Beach Day, Gurwin Jewish ~ Fay J. Lindner Residences Assisted Living Community is proud to celebrate the stories and memories that shape its residents' lives, blending the past with the present in fun, meaningful ways.
