In addition to voting on the Commack School District's 2013-14 budget Tuesday, residents will also decide whether or not to increase the number of trustees on the Board of Education.
The board currently has five trustees. If the proposition is passed, a special election will be held over the summer to elect two more trustees, which are unpaid positions.
Jim Tampellini, who is also running for the Board of Education, started a petition in March to raise the number of representatives on the board. He argued that bringing additional perspectives to the budget process would help control spending.
The Commack PTA has come out against the proposition. The president of the organization said in the PTA newsletter that she did not see how the proposal would benefit students.
Voters Tuesday appeared to have mixed opinions on the decision.
"I think it's good to put more people in. Putting more people in puts more decisions at the table," Denise Reilly said, adding that she wants to see budget reform within the school district.
Agnes Tieri said she came out to vote to make sure the students are taken care of. She is not in favor of expanding the school board.
"I think it's self-serving," Tieri said.
The polls will be open at the High School and Middle School until 9 p.m.
