Commack Woman Wins $1 Million Lottery

A Commack woman struck gold, winning $1 million playing an instant lottery game, the New York Lottery announced Friday.

Maria Matthews Sanders was one of nine winners who shared $13 million, according the Lottery officials.

Obituary: Ron Lupo, 47, Commack Pitcher

Ron Lupo, who is remembered as one of Commack’s greatest pitchers, died Monday of brain cancer. He was 47 years old.

Lupo was a pitcher at Commack North High School, where he was named an All-Suffolk baseball player. He graduated in 1984 and went on to become a college All-American at LIU-Post, where he was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame, acording to a report in Newsday.

Police: Drugged Driving Ends in Crash

A Commack driver was allegedly on drugs when she crossed over a double yellow line and crashed into oncoming traffic in Smithtown on Friday.

According to police, Rachel Shavzin, 29, was driving a 2012 Honda Accord on Old Willets Path in Smithtown when she started driving on the opposite side of the road and crashed her vehicle into an oncoming car.

Holocaust Survivor Tells Incredible Life Story

Mordechai Miller survived the Holocaust living as a "hidden child" in Poland during Nazi occupation. Through incredible luck and determination, he made it and is alive today to tell his story, which he recently did with seventh grade students at Temple Beth David in Commack.
